Feb 6, 2003 -- Legal Center Files Brief in Ashcroft Case The Legal Center filed this amicus curiae, or "friend of the court," brief in Alliance for Democracy v. FEC, a case before a federal district court in Washington, D.C. In this case, the National Voting Rights institute and others are challenging the FEC for failing to act for nearly two years on a complaint alleging campaign finance abuses by now-Attorney General John Ashcroft's reelection campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2000. In their brief in support of the plaintiffs in a key discovery dispute, the Legal Center argues that the FEC must comply with normal discovery rules, and produce documents requested by plaintiffs. The Legal Center also reasons that without access to such case-related materials, citizens will never be able to successfully challenge the Commission - a result that would ignore the plain intent of Congress.
